London 2012 and Thames Gateway
The 2012 Olympics project, which is centred around East London will benefit heavily from the use of stabilisation techniques to achieve its' stated aim of minimal environmental impact.
The south east has a history of successful stabilisation projects, including the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). The Stratford Box project used stabilisation techniques to massively reduce site arisings.
The soils of the south east are particularly receptive to stabilisation, due to their clay composition.
Stabilisation offers a range of benefits, which are summarised below:
Reduced Environmental Impact
- Less vehicle movements
- Less waste exported to landfill
- Less virgin aggregate imported to site
Safer Roads
- Less vehicles means less chance of an accident
Reduced Cost
- Less landfill tax to pay
- Less aggregate tax to pay
- Less overall cost by up to 40%
Shorter Project Timescale
- Stabilisation can save 40% on normal "dig and dump" timescales
